How aspect ratio works
An aspect ratio describes the proportion of width to height, independent of actual size. 16:9 — the standard for most monitors, laptops and HD/4K video — means that for every 16 units of width there are 9 units of height. Because it is a ratio, 1280×720, 1920×1080 and 3840×2160 all share the same 16:9 shape.
Keeping a fixed ratio when you resize prevents images and video from stretching or showing letterbox bars. Enter your target width or height above and the calculator preserves the ratio for you.
